The Dig for Victory 1940s weekend
The dig for victory 1940'sreturns to The Whitehall Garden Centre this summer. On Saturday 21st and Sunday 22nd August, this friendly local event will once again welcome re-enactors, exhibitors, and members of the general public. Visitors are actively encouraged to enter into the spirit by dressing the part. This is a true family day out with something for everyone young and old. So if you want to come along and reminisce, join in the fun or simply take a look then you will be made most welcome. The unique venue means that participants and members of the public can also benefit from the on-site restaurant , children's play area, and other garden centre attractions. And admission is free!
Although space is limited, the organizers (members of the West Wiltshire MVT and fellow volunteers) manage to pack in around 50 military vehicles and this year's event promises to be bigger than ever. Alongside the impressive display of vehicles will be static displays including a field hospital, a NAAFI ,and a women's land army garden. Add to this a large marquee hosting an impressive homefront/civilian display complete with music, dancing, and the ever present ARP warden to check ID papers, and you have the ingredients for a truly memorable day out. No doubt, the resident spiv, 'Lucky' Uncle George, will be regularly arrested by the police or members of HM forces, while Aunty Vera and chums will be teaching the 'Tennessee Wig-walk' and other wartime dances. And you can even have your 40's hair and make up done by stylist and vintage clothing seller 'Lady She', ready for the Saturday night 1940's style Big Band Dance.
For this year's event the organisers would like include a tribute to members of The Women's Land Army who served in the area. We would love to hear from anyone who was, or has relatives or loved ones who were, part of the WLA in Wiltshire. |
