In the spring, chaenomeles produce single or clustered cup-shaped, 5-petalled blooms, which are followed by tasty, frequently aromatic, green or yellow fruits. Chaenomeles are deciduous, typically prickly shrubs with simple leaves.
This prickly, deciduous shrub, also known as the Japanese Quince 'Crimson and Gold,' blooms profusely on bare branches in the early spring with red cup-shaped flowers that have golden centres.
Surprisingly, the tiny, shiny leaves start to appear soon after. The yellow-green fruit eventually replaces the blossoms, extending the season's colour. This well-known shrub is hardy and low-maintenance, making it perfect for training.
