A climber 1.5-2m high with green leaves and flowers, 10-15cm across, composed of six to eight purple sepals with reddish maroon bars, and cream-yellow anthers on green-white filaments, in early summer and again in late summer and autumn; many clematis are visited by bees for pollen, and some also provide nectar.
Clematis can be deciduous or evergreen shrubs or herbaceous perennials, mostly climbing by twining leaf-stalks, and often with showy flowers. Some have attractive fluffy seedheads in autumn
